Prof. Xiao's research mainly focuses on machine learning, including deep learning and reinforcement learning, as well as its application in network security such as virus detection and prevention in smart devices, phishing protection, vulnerability mining, rumor detection and network traffic identification. In addition, Prof. Xiao is also interested in the field of Block chain.

Prof. Xiao's research mainly focuses on machine learning, including deep learning and reinforcement learning, as well as its application in network security such as virus detection and prevention in smart devices, phishing protection, vulnerability mining, rumor detection and network traffic identification. In addition, Prof. Xiao is also interested in the field of Block chain. 

Prof. Xiao has hosted a number of research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 plans) sub-topics, National Key Research and Development Project sub-topics, the National Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, Shenzhen basic research project and so on. 

Prof. Xiao has published more than 50 papers in international academic journals and conferences (more than 20 papers are indexed by SCI) including Journal of Systems and Software, Neutral Networks, Information Sciences, IET Information Security and Future Generation Computer Systems. He is also a reviewer for several journals and have published papers in influential international conferences of machine learning and computer network, such as CVPR, AAAI, ICSSAP, ESORICS and IWQOS.
