Biography
Haohuan Fu, Professor of Tsinghua University, focused on cross-integration research of High Performance Computing, AI and Earth system science, and has made significant contributions in scaling over tens of millions of heterogeneous cores for a series of key applications (e.g. climate model, earthquake simulation, etc.). Professor Fu has published more than 200 journal and conference papers, and have led multiple key research and development programs.
Professor Fu won three ACM Gordon Bell Prizes, the highest award in the field of high performance computing (fully-implicit atmospheric dynamic solver in 2016, non-linear earthquake simulation in 2017, and large-scale quantum circuit simulation in 2021), also won 2016 Tsinghua-Inspur Computational Earth Science Young Researcher Award, 2017 Chinese Institute of Electronics Award For Science and Technology Advancements (Only 14 worldwide), 2020 China Youth May Fourth Medal, 2022 Tsinghua University: Team of Excellence , 2022 CCF HPC China: The Best HPC Application Nomination, 2023 Wu Wenjun Award for AI Science and Technology Advancements (Second Class), and 2024 CCF HPC China: The Best HPC Application Nomination.
The HPGC research group leaded by Professor Fu focus on cross-integration research of Computer science, Artificial Intelligence and Earth system science, and keep resolving the physical world problems in a digital model, generally enabled by cutting-edge parallel computers. Mainly includes:
Design and realize the high-precision earth system key circle simulation software, which is scalable, convenient, and efficient to 100-peta or even exa-scale supercomputers, with tens of millions of cores.
Explore the automatic data processing methods that can efficiently analyze large spatial and temporal scale observation data.
The fusion development of the above numerical simulation software and big data analysis software.
Our group have undertaken a number of projects such as the key Research and development plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and have cooperated with Huawei, Microsoft, IBM, Intel, Norway Oil, Aramco, CNPC, Schlumberger and many other enterprises.

Research Interests
1.Extreme-Scale Computing on Heterogeneous Supercomputers: one of my research interest is to explore the numerical methods, parallelization schemes, performance tuning techniques, as well as redesigning strategies for mapping some of the most challenging scientific applications, such as atmospheric modeling, and earthquake simulation, onto emerging many-core, and reconfigurable architectures, and to enable depiction of extreme-scale scientific scenarios on leadership peta to exa-scale supercomputers.
2.Data Mining Methods for Analyzing Scientific Data Sets: facing a fast growth in the volume of data from both observations and simulations, we explore parallel data mining methods, enabled by the emerging heterogeneous architectures, to acclerate the process of making new discoveries.
3.Fusion of the above two.
4.Application-specific hardware customization.
