On the evening of December 29th, 2024, “SIGS Global Voices—Chinese Opera Night” was held at the Energy & Enviornment Building Lecture Hall, organized by the Global Affairs Office of SIGS and the Taoyuan Sub-district Office. The event attracted over 200 international faculty and students, from the three universities and schools of University Town, as well as Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and other partner institutions. The purpose of the event was to showcase Chinese unique traditional culture to international faculty and students, and foster cultural exchange between China and the world. Tsinghua SIGS Associate Dean Zuo Jian’e, Director of the Global Affairs Office Ma Zhenyi and guests from the Taoyuan Sub-district Office attended the event.
During the event, faculty and students from over 40 countries enjoyed the spectacular performances of Peking Opera, Henan Opera, and Sichuan Opera. They watched performances including The Drunken Concubine, Journey to the West - The Flower & Fruit Mountain, Face Changing, Carrying The Bridal Palanquin, as well asactively participated in the interactive quiz rounds. Through these performances and the quizzes, international attendees not only gained insight into the prosperous Tang Dynasty, the cultural content of the Four Great Classical Novels, the artistic achievements of the famous opera master Mei Lanfang, and traditional wedding customs, but also were inspired to share their own traditional customs and cultures, fostering excellent exchange and interaction.
Before the show, international faculty and students personally immersed themselves in the essence of Chinese opera culture through an “Opera Expo”. Fun activities included painting masks, trying on opera costumes and makeup, as well as playing traditional instruments sparked immense interest among the participants.
At the end of the event, faculty and students stated that they had a deeper appreciation for the charm of Chinese traditional culture and looked forward to participating in similar events in the future to further enrich their understanding of Chinese culture.
