Oriented to the core needs of high-quality development and based on the forefront of international disciplines, iEE are committed to studying the theory of ecological and environmental protection, investigating key technologies, cultivating high-level personnel with global competence, and providing science and technology talent support for ecological civilization and community building with a shared future for mankind. Our six research areas include: urban environment and compound ecology, industry and special environmental protection, land and sea interactive environmental protection, regional cross-media complex pollution and environmental health, big data and system management of ecological environment, climate change and future ecological environment protection.
Required Qualifications of Applicants
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid personal ordinary-type passport.
2. Master's degree program applicants should have a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree to a Bachelor's degree (or above) in China. Doctoral degree program applicants should have a Master's degree or an equivalent degree to a Master's degree (or above) in China. The students who will enroll in 2025 must obtain the nationally recognized bachelor's or master's degree (for the universities of Chinese mainland) or the authentication report issued by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE) (for overseas universities) before THU graduate student registration date of 2025, otherwise the admission qualification is invalid.
3. For bachelor degree holders to pursue doctoral degrees. Applicants must meet all the uniform requirements of the university, as well as the requirements of SIGS listed below:
l The Minimum Requirement of Undergraduate GPA or Average scores: 3.5/4.0 or B+ or 85/100;
l Chinese Proficiency Requirement: HSK band 4 with a score of 195 or above; English program applicants can be exempt from the HSK certificates.
l Non-native English speakers must meet the minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL:80/IELTS:6.5.
Overview of our programs
Institute of Environment and Ecology(iEE) offers 2 Master’s Programs and 2 Doctoral Programs to international students. Master's degree programs are generally required to be completed in 2-3 years, and Doctoral degree programs in 3-4 years. For students with a Bachelor's degree who move on directly to pursue a Doctoral degree program, the study period is normally 4-5 years.

Application Documents
Please upload all the documents listed below to the application system:
1. Personal statement.
The personal statement should be completed directly in the application system. PhD applicants are also required to upload a brief research experience or research plan.
2. Degree certificate and degree authentication.
Master's degree program applicants should submit their Bachelor's degree certificate. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit both their Master's and Bachelor's degree certificates. The degree diploma awarded by overseas universities should be authenticated by Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSCSE: http://zwfw.cscse.edu.cn/).The degree diploma awarded by universities of Chinese mainland should be authenticated by Center for Student Services and Development, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSSD: https://www.chsi.com.cn/en/).
Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline shall provide the expected graduation certificate first, and the degree diploma and degree authentication must be submitted before registration. (Applicants who have graduated are required to provide the degree authentication at the same time.)
3. Academic transcript.
Master's degree program applicants should submit the academic transcript of their undergraduate study. Doctoral degree program applicants should submit academic transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate studies. Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline shall provide their current academic transcript. In this case, the completed academic transcript must be submitted before registration. If the uploaded transcript cannot directly show the total GPA score, the GPA certification document issued by the university is also required.
4. HSK certificate and score report for programs offered in Chinese. For related requirements, please check the program remarks in the 'Catalog of Graduate Programs 2024'. Applicants who complete their undergraduate or master's studies in Chinese must provide a certificate issued by the university they graduated from. After obtaining the permission of the applied school/department, they can be exempted from submitting the HSK score certificate. Those who intend to apply for Chinese government scholarships must provide corresponding HSK score report according to the requirements of scholarship application.
5. Two academic recommendation letters
Academic Recommendation Letters from scholars who hold the title of associate professor or higher, or senior professionals in a related academic field. Please follow the instructions on the online system for submission of online recommendation letters or upload the recommendation letters signed by references.
6. Passport (Personal ordinary-type passport): Passport information page
Applicants should present information page of personal ordinary-type passport. Those who previously held Chinese nationality and subsequently acquired foreign nationality are required to provide certificate of cancelled Chinese household registration (Hukou) and certificate of naturalized citizenship of other countries.
7. English Resume
8. Proof of English language proficiency: Applicants who are not native English speakers should have good English communication abilities and provide valid English Proficiency Certificate: TOEFL/ IELTS/GRE/CET/TEM,etc.
9. Other materials: such as published articles, patents, etc.
10. Physical Examination Form for Foreigners: A copy of the Physical Examination Form for Foreigners must be submitted (keep the original on your own; this form is uniformly printed by the Chinese health quarantine authorities and must be completed in English). The applicant shall strictly follow the items required in the Physical Examination Form for Foreigners. The Physical Examination Form for Foreigners with missing items, without a photo of the applicant or a stamp on the photo, and without the signature and stamp of the physician and the hospital is invalid. The examination results are valid for six months.

Decision timelines vary by program, and the graduate program to which you applied will communicate the admission decision to you in accordance with the program's notification timeline.
Scholarships and Assistantship
1. At present, Tsinghua University mainly provides the following scholarships for outstanding prospective full-time international graduate students.
l Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) - The Full CGS usually covers tuition, stipend, on-campus accommodation (or accommodation subsidy), and medical insurance. The Partial CGS includes one or a few items in the Full CGS. Annual Review is strictly required for all CGS holders.
l Tuition Scholarship - For example, the Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students, covers full or partial tuition fee with a duration of one academic year. Applicants may apply for Tuition Scholarships annually (competitive).
l SIGS outstanding Scholarship - Applications from full-time international new students admitted to our institute will be ranked and selected based on their previous academic achievements, research outcomes, and overall performance. The specific amount of the scholarship will be tiered and distributed according to the results of the annual selection process.
2. iEE provides iEE New Student Scholarship and Assistantship
l iEE New Student Scholarship.
The Scholarship Amount Equal to full or partial tuition fee for the duration of one academic year (12 months).
Conditions and Eligibility: International students who are pre-admitted to the full-time master's degree program at the Institute of Environment and Ecology, Tsinghua SIGS.

l iEE Assistantship
Institute of Environment and Ecology offers different assistantship for outstanding or needy students.

Visa Application and Registration
1. Admitted students should apply for a student visa (X1 visa) at the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China in their home country. To apply, students should provide their personal ordinary-type passport, Admission Notice and its Appendix, Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/JW202), and Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (applicants should confirm with the Chinese embassy/consulate for specific requirements).
2. Students must enter China with an ordinary-type passport (nationality and personal information must be consistent with the passport information as applying) and X1 visa, and must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days after arrival in China. Students are required to arrive at Tsinghua University and complete their university registration during the dates indicated in the admission package.
3. Normally, registration is held in late August or early September at Shenzhen. All students should present the required original degree certificates, and submit the degree authentication issued by THU designated institutions upon registration at Tsinghua University for enrollment qualification review. Students who fail the enrollment qualification review will be disqualified from enrollment and study at Tsinghua University.
Accommodation
SIGS provides accommodation for all full-time graduate students.
School accommodation is automatically reserved for admitted students and students do not need to apply on their own. For reference, the housing rate for 2024 is 1000 RMB per month for single bedroome. Housing rate for 2025 will be noticed upon registration.
Students who wish to live off-campus are required to provide the International Students & Scholars Center (issc@sz.tsinghua.edu.cn) with their address, and are responsible for completing a Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors within 24 hours of moving in.
