The First Cruise of the TOWER Project under UN Ocean Decade

From October 2 to 6, 2024, 16 faculty members and students from Institute for Ocean Engineering successfully completed the first cruise mission of Twilight Zone of West Pacific: Ecosystem Research Project (TOWER) under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade).

The scientific expedition, setting sail from Shenzhen and traveling to and from the Shenhu area of the northern margin of the South China Sea, covered a distance of approximately 450 kilometers. This cruise completed surveys at four stations on the continental shelf and tested the performance and reliability of the Qingshen deep-sea in-situ experimental platform and other equipment developed by our institute.

Faculty members and students participating in this mission came from six research groups within Institute for Ocean Engineering. Through team collaborations, interdisciplinary integration between marine science and technology was achieved. This cruise laid a solid foundation for subsequent scientific expeditions of the TOWER project.
