On the morning of August 24, new students gathered at the University Town Sports Center for the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS) Opening Convocation 2024.

During the convocation, Ouyang Zheng, the Dean of SIGS, extended a warm welcome to the incoming students, encouraging them to cultivate a mindset of observation, dare to think creatively, and embrace new endeavors with courage. He exhorted the students to embrace their innate potential, instilling confidence in their ability to contribute meaningfully to groundbreaking scientific discoveries, technological advancements, and shaping the global landscape. Crucially, he inspired them to have unwavering faith in their capacity to initiate change, both in China and the world, starting from this moment. He further challenged the students to embrace challenging tasks head-on, seeking out fresh avenues for exploration and expansion of their horizons. In closing, he expressed his heartfelt wishes for an enriching and exhilarating academic journey filled with boundless positivity, vitality, and limitless growth opportunities.

Research associate professor Wu Zhiyong, from the Institute of Data and Information, spoke on behalf of the faculty. By sharing both his personal experiences and student stories, he stressed the significance of belief and perseverance. He expressed, "Self-discipline" inspires us to pursue excellence on the path of academic exploration constantly; "Social Commitment" reminds us that individual growth cannot be separated from the power of the collective, and personal achievements should also serve society. It is hoped that everyone can contribute to the advancement of society while realizing their self-worth.

Li Yi, an alumnus of the Department of Automotive Engineering from the class 1986, who is the founder and chairman of Appotronics, delivered a speech on behalf of the alumni, warmly welcoming and sincerely congratulating all new students. He reflected on his studies and life at Tsinghua University and the development journey of Appotronics, encouraging everyone to use their knowledge to promote social development, and to create a better life for humanity. The motto of "Self-discipline and Social Commitment" will accompany everyone throughout their professional career, which is also the spiritual quality deeply ingrained in TsinghuaRen. Finally, Li Yi wished the students outstanding achievements on their future academic path and wished that SIGS would cultivate more outstanding talents, contributing Tsinghua's strength to the nation's development.

Student representatives also shared their thoughts. Hou Hanyi, a second-year doctoral student in Chemical Engineering and Technology, Yang Qinxian, an incoming master's student in Electronic Information, Zheng Ziying, an incoming doctoral student in Civil Engineering, and Kapetanios Matthaios, an incoming international master's student in Logistics Engineering and Management from Greece, spoke on behalf of current and incoming students, expressing their determination to strive for excellence and grow comprehensively at Tsinghua SIGS.
