Excitement was in the air on the morning of May 18 as the spring season of the Third Shenzhen X9 Alliance of Universities and Institutes Rowing League Around X-Lake Sciensity opened along the Maozhou River in Guangming District. Twenty-one crews of over 300 athletes from nine higher education and research institutions in Shenzhen competed in the races.
During the opening ceremony, Qiu Chengyu, deputy director of the Education Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, and Ouyang Zheng, dean of Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), delivered remarks.
This year’s X9 spring rowing league is comprised of three days of races: the first in Guangming District, which took place on May 18, the second in University Town which took place on May 19, and the last on the Dasha River in late June. The league will use a cumulative points system to determine the winning teams.

On the first day of races, the SIGS mascot Miao-Miao cheered on the school’s crews. The student men’s eight and mixed eight crew took first place in the final races of the day. The expert eight crew secured fourth place. Among the participating institutions, SIGS, Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology, and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) ranked in the top three, respectively, based on accumulated points for the first day of races.

The following day on the Dasha River in University Town, the SIGS student men’s eight crew won first place while the student mixed eight crew took second place.

The dedication and hard work of all three SIGS crews have put SIGS into first place in the spring rowing league so far. After two days of fierce competition, the Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology secured second place, followed by the Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) in third. The spring season of the Third Shenzhen X9 Alliance of Universities and Institutes Rowing League Around X-Lake Sciensity is guided by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government and spearheaded by the Education Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality. It is supported by the Culture, Media, Tourism, and Sports Bureau and the Science and Technology Innovation Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality. The event was hosted by the X9 Alliance and co-organized by SIGS, the Nanshan District Government, and the Guangming District Government.
