Students learn finances in SIGS Science Outreach Program

On November 8, Tsinghua SIGS held its ninth Science Outreach Program with the theme of “My First Stock.” 16 students from 12 middle schools in Shenzhen joined the event, and gained knowledge about finances and stocks through various hands-on activities. The event was hosted by the SIGS Teaching Center for Experimentation and Practice, and co-organized by the Financial Engineering and Innovation Laboratory.


At the Financial Engineering and Innovation Lab, Engineer Zhou Yi told vivid stories of legendary investors Buffett and Lynch, and explained basic knowledge of stocks and investment. Students were reminded to invest rationally when they grow up, and to form reasonable concepts of money. Students also learned more about the importance of finance, math and statistics during the event.

During the practice session, students performed hands-on stock selection and gained a preliminary experience of different security analysis methods. In small groups, they presented on the results.

The Science Outreach Program was launched by Tsinghua SIGS to serve primary and middle school students in Shenzhen. Events make full use of SIGS teaching laboratory equipments and resources to offer science education to the community, and hopes to inspire scientists, mathematicians, and engineers of the future.
