SIGS students visit tech giants in Shenzhen

Published:2020.11.06

Recently, over 120 Tsinghua SIGS students from the course “Frontiers of AI technology and industrial applications” visited high-tech firms including Tencent, DJI, and UBTECH to learn about the latest technology and industry updates in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

AI at Tencent: Smart Healthcare

At the Tencent headquarters, students saw how the latest AI technologies have been applied to various scenarios, including smart parking, people flow monitoring, and assisted diagnosis.

AI-assisted diagnosis powering smart healthcare

The company's smart healthcare system leverages AI technologies to analyze large amounts of medical guidelines, publications, and real cases, map symptoms to diagnostic decisions, and assist doctors in the diagnosis and treatment process. Patients can also use a mini-program to perform a preliminary diagnosis before seeing a doctor.

Apart from smart healthcare, Tencent also extends AI technologies to the entertainment industry and other areas, actively proposing solutions and formulating China's AI standards.

AI at DJI: Drones

Students visited the DJI showroom where a series of commercial drones, industrial drones, plant protection drones and professional imaging drones were displayed.

Staff introduced students to the details of each model, such as its research and development process, technical innovation, design goal, and competitive edge. Students were interested in gesture control technology that was used in drones, and discussed how depth camera and deep learning were involved.

AI at UBTECH: Smart Robots

Students learned more about UBTECH’s intelligent service robot Cruzr. Its head is equipped with an infrared camera, which allows body temperature measurement and screening. The company’s lineup of service robots were actively used during the fight against COVID-19.

Students were also impressed by Walker, an intelligent bipedal humanoid robot, which was able get a drink from a refrigerator with human instructions. Its fingers have nine degrees of freedom, allowing it to use draw and sign with a marker, or grasp and manipulate objects. Its dexterity and maneuverability sparked discussions among students.

UBTECH is committed to developing, manufacturing, and selling AI products and humanoids. Its goal is to bring smart robots into every household to make daily life more convenient and intelligent.

These field trips to Tencent, DJI and UBTECH inspired students to think out of the box for future innovation and creation. Led by Prof. Li Xiu from the Division of Information Science and Technology, the course partners with neighboring schools such as Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), and experts teams from Tencent, Huawei, UBTECH and other companies. It showcases cutting edge technologies and their latest applications, and aims to nurture a new generation of versatile and innovative AI talents.
