Published:2020.10.28

On October 23, Tsinghua SIGS hosted the Shenzhen finals for the third "Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei-Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao” Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. 20 out of 116 teams across the country entered the final round and presented their innovative projects to mentors, investors and entrepreneurs.

The annual competition launched by Tsinghua University and the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of China aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in colleges and universities, create a platform for policy guidance and sharing, and serve the regional economy and development of future intelligent cities.

Some projects that entered the Shenzhen finals include: “SafeHeart Toothbrush,” a toothbrush that uses biochip technology to monitor diabetes; an intelligent assistance system for the visually impaired; and a smart screening system for prevention of myopia among adolescents. Teams attempt at creating products or services with social impact, and involve technologies across data analysis, deep learning, new materials, biochips, advanced manufacturing and other areas.

Huo Xinming, a Ph.D. graduate from Tsinghua University’s Department of Precision Instruments, won first place with his team, Shenzhen Chen Instrument Co. Ltd. The team works on developing a portable mass spectrometer. The top six projects will then enter the National Finals.

Wang Dali, Minister of Development of the Alliance’s Secretariat pointed out that more teams are on the frontiers of science and technology, and using tech to improve people's livelihood and health. Teams also show younger and more dynamic characteristics of regional innovation and entrepreneurship. Wang emphasized that the competition provides a platform for teams to exchange with industry partners, and looked forward to their future development.
