On May 16, Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) held the 2020 unified examination with domestic students and interviews with international, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students online. TBSI online interviews follow high standards and strict requirements, maintaining the same standards as Tsinghua University in all aspects of the enrollment process.
Based on three professional fields: Physical Science and Technology, Data Science and Technology, and Biomedical Science and Technology, applicants were divided into six groups. 31 TBSI core PIs served as interview examiners, and a total of 94 candidates participated in the interviews, including 16 international students and 2 students from Macao and Taiwan. Applicants come from well-known universities at home and abroad such as Tsinghua University (THU), Peking University (PKU), Beihang University (BUAA), UC Berkeley (UCB), The University of Manchester (UOM) and Durham University.
TBSI 2020 admission and online interview
Online interviews are a feasible way for PIs to examine candidates’ quick-thinking abilities and immediate response during this special period of time. Interviewers mainly evaluated candidates on their professional knowledge, language competency and comprehensive ability.
What qualities does TBSI look for in their candidates? Examiners provided some suggestions below.
Firstly, students with a pioneering and innovative spirit who show more thought in interdisciplinary research and propose a clearer research plan are favored.
Applicants should have a basic understanding of the professional field they are applying to, and more importantly, evaluate whether their accumulated knowledge is sufficient for interdisciplinary research.
It is also a great advantage if students have research and internship experience in their related fields as examiners value students’ ability to apply knowledge.
Lastly, candidates should have an open mind on new models of teaching and explore new research fields. In the future, the industry needs talents with comprehensive knowledge, and students are encouraged to make use of opportunities at TBSI to build expertise and plan for their bright futures.
TBSI sets up 3 major interdisciplinary research centers and 18 laboratories for environmental sciences and new energy technologies, data science and information technology, as well as precision medicine and public health. It aims to select outstanding students from around the world, provide a superior research environment and encourage students to develop innovative thinking and creativity in an interdisciplinary and international atmosphere.
