This March, Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) and the Tsinghua SIGS Interactive Media Design and Technology (IMDT) Program continue to conduct online interviews to select overseas applicants for the upcoming fall semester.
TBSI holds 2nd Round of International Interviews
On March 6, TBSI held its second round of international student interviews for the fall semester. After an initial selection process, 24 international students participated in the interview, with 5 doctoral and 19 master’s program applicants.
Based on three professional fields: Physical Science and Technology, Data Science and Technology, and Biomedical Science and Technology, students were divided into two groups and interviewers evaluated each student on various aspects such as professional background, academic research, and language competency.

Facing sudden challenges caused by the epidemic, both teaching and IT support teams have put in great effort to ensure that the interviews would run smoothly. Staff contacted each student in advance to test connections, and helped an Iranian student who was unable to use Zoom connect through Skype to complete the interview.
This year, applicants come from well-known overseas universities such as UC Berkeley, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), Polytechnic University of Turin (POLITO), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), University of Auckland (UOA) and National University of Singapore (NUS), spanning 19 countries around the world. The interviewing panel consisted of 11 faculty members including TBSI Co-Associate Director Prof. Wai Kin (Victor) Chan, Prof. Yaojiong Wu and Visiting Prof. Ercan E. Kuruoglu.
TBSI builds interdisciplinary research centers around three areas of environmental science and new energy technology, data science and information technology, precision medicine and healthcare. Integrating industry connections as well as advanced research and education resources of Tsinghua and UC Berkeley, TBSI will continue to train future technology leaders from around the world, and assist in the development of regional and global technological innovation.
IMDT Program Interviews International Applicants
On March 13, international applicants from the United States, Canada and Thailand were interviewed for the Tsinghua SIGS Interactive Media Design and Technology (IMDT) Program.
The IMDT Master’s Program was jointly established by Tsinghua SIGS and Tencent with the aims to train future leaders, top game planners, designers and producers in the field of interactive media. During the interview, candidates presented a portfolio of their previous works such as electronic games and animations to the admissions panel. They vividly described their work to show their experience and capabilities in the field of interactive media.

In 2019, the IMDT Center was established to cultivate talents with design thinking and innovative skills, entrepreneurship and leadership, as well as cross-cultural teamwork abilities. The Center aims to further develop the cultural and creative industry, and build an experimental base for open technology innovation and cross-disciplinary practices in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area.

The first round of international student interviews for other Tsinghua SIGS programs was previously held online in December and January. Candidates from Canada, Malaysia, Poland, Pakistan, Myanmar and other countries were interviewed for Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Engineering, Internet + Innovative Design, Future Human Habitat Design and other graduate programs.
