Dr. Yang has undertaken more than 40 scientific research projects, including projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology Talent Plan, Guangdong Science and Technology Department, Hunan Development and Reform Commission and Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission.

Prof. Cheng Yang's research group focuses on the methodology studies of manipulating functional nanostructures under non-equilibrium thermodynamics conditions, which shed light on the innovations of metal anodes for batteries, electrocatalytic electrodes, sensors, and device packages etc.
Prof. Cheng Yang has been dedicated in developing experimental platforms and related theories, and successfully realized functional nanostructures e.g. fractal dendrites (Nat. Commun. 2015; Adv. Mater. 2023),nanowire arrays (Adv. Mater. 2016; Nat. Commun. 2023), “snake-cage” structured lithium dendrite structure (Nat. Commun. 2018), “nanothorn” structure of metal alloys (Energy Environ. Sci. 2021; Adv. Mater. 2023) and “nanocone” structures of metal alloys (Energy Environ. Sci. 2014, Adv. Mater. 2021),
, which show superior performance and great promise in various applications including bezel-free touch panels, water splitting electrodes, electrochromic devices, biosensors, and miniaturized energy storage/harvest devices.
At present, he has published more than 100 professional papers, cited for over 7000 times by others, filed more than 50 invention patents granted by China and the United States, and achieved technology transfer for 6 projects. He has won the China Invention and Innovation Award (1st prize, ranked first), China Industry-University Research Cooperation and Innovation Award (2nd prize, ranked second ), High-end Expert Award Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Guangdong Science Fund for Outstanding Youth, Guangdong Youth Science and Technology Award, Tsinghua University New Scientist Award and other honors.
